MAME - Herb Alpert & his Tijuana Brass  A & M 823 (1966).  Also track on LP - Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass Greatest Hits, A & M AMLS 980. The album was in the American charts for 6 weeks at the end of 1966. Also used by Graham Gill

BRIAN McKENZIE (RNI)

a) CARPET MAN - 5th Dimension Liberty LBF15052 (1968) Bell MABEL 3 (1972). Brian was known as "BMK" to his colleagues, BMK was also the name of a well known British carpet company, hence the choice of theme.

b) THE SHOW IS OVER - Petula Clark  Pye 7N17258 (1967). The B side of the hit This is my song, was used to close Brian McKenzie’s show. Klaas Vaak also used it for the same purpose.

c) ROCK N' ROLL LULLABY - B .J. Thomas Scepter 05-1001 (NL.1972); Wand WN24 (UK.1972)

d) THE HORSE - Cliff Nobles & Co Direction 58-3518 (UK.1968). Better known as the Radio Veronica Drive In show theme, this was used by Brian during 1971.

MIKE MARRIOTT (Caroline North)

SHAZAM - The Shadows Columbia DB7163 (1963) Caroline listener Alan Milewczyk writes that "tonight, I looked through a box of radio notes and cuttings which I hadn't looked at in over 30 years, and there was a letter to me from Mike himself (during late '64) confirming it was the Shadows version. Others have stated that Mike used a different version of Shazam - Duanne Eddy on London HLW9104 (1960). Did Mike possibly used this version at a later date, does anyone know?

EVERYWHERE YOU GO - Illusion Track on LP Out Of The Mist Island ILPS 9489 (UK.1977) Illusion were a spin-off from the famous band Renaissance in 1977-1979. Thanks to Marcel van Ek for information.

MAGNIFICENT 7 - Al Caiola and his orchestra London HLT 9294 (UK.1961) Used as a closing theme to Paul's RNI shows.

WALLY MEEHAN (Caroline North)

SWINGING SAFARI - Bert Kaempfert and his Orchestra  Polydor NH66983 (1962).Title track on LP Swinging Safari Polydor 237 584 (1962) an excellent early stereo release. Also used by Radio Syd as station theme.

a) HAPPY ORGAN - Dave "Baby" Cortez London HLU8852 (1958). Stevie Merrike's theme on Radio Scotland.

b) BILLYS BAG - Billy Preston Sue WI4012 (1966) was used on Caroline South as Stevie's theme.

c) THE ROBINS RETURN - Neville Dickie  Major Minor MM 644 (1969). Used by Stevie to talk over during his RNI evening shows.

a) BAUBLES, BANGLES AND BEADS - The Kirby Stone Four with Jimmy Carroll and his Orchestra  Philips PB 842 (1958). Cover version from the Broadway production "Kismet", The Kirby Stone Four backed Elvis Presley on Love Me Tender instead of the Jordanaires, who were not felt to be professional enough.

b) DUELLING VOICES - Ray Conniff Track on album You are the Sunshine of my Life CBS 92376 (USA.1976)

CARL MITCHELL (Caroline South / RNI)

a) GREEN ONIONS - Booker T and the MG’s London HLK9595 (1962) Green Onions" was a million seller in the USA in 1962 for Memphis born Booker T. Jones and his group the M.G.’s (Memphis group), but it was not until December 1979 that the tune reached number seven in the UK charts, the track was Carl’s theme on "The Night Owl Prowl" on Caroline South in the early morning hours.

b) IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR - Little Mac and the Boss Sounds Atlantic 584031 (1966) Carl took over this theme and an earlier time slot from Steve Young, who left Caroline ahead of the then forthcoming MOA. Also used as a theme by Rick Dane and Steve Young.

c) SLIM JENKINS PLACE - Booker T and the MG’s  Stax 601018 (1967). Some confusion over sides on this disc, some sources list this as B side of Groovin’. Carl’s theme on RNI.

HENRY MORGAN (Caroline)

SUCU SUCU - Laurie Johnson Orchestra Pye 7N15383 (1961) Henry Morgan was previously known as Gerry Burke on Caroline. The name change came about because of the UK's 1967 Marine Offences Act.

HANS MONDT (Veronica)

a) DIAMONDS - Jet Harris and Tony Meehan Decca F11563 (1962) Diamonds was a number one hit in January 1963. Also used as a theme by Cliff Cottell, Will Luikinga, and Dave Rogers.

b) LET’S GET AWAY FROM IT ALL - Della Reece RCA 1185 (1960) (audio required)

CHRIS MOORE (Caroline South)

I'VE GOT A WOMAN - Jimmy McGriff  Sue 770 (US.1962). Sue WI317 (UK.5/64), "I've got a woman" was a 1955 hit for Ray Charles, jazz organist McGriff's 1962 release took him into the Top 20 of the US Billboard chart, making him one of the most successful crossover artistes of the time. The theme was later used by Errol Bruce on Caroline.

EL CUMBANCHERO - Trinity  The Belgian group, known for the disco version of We Love the Pirate stations. (release details required)

SPANGLES MULDOON (Caroline South / RNI)

a) YEH YEH - Mark Wirtz Orchestra Track on the LP Latin a Go-Go Ember SLP5033 (1965) An instrumental version of the Georgie Fame hit, used on Caroline in 1967/8.  Wirtz was also known as "Mood Mosaic", see Dave Lee Travis entry. 

b) YOU DIDN’T LIKE IT BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T THINK OF IT - Hotlegs Fontana 6007019 (June 1970). The B side of the hit Neanderthal Man. This theme contains a long instrumental intro’ before the vocals, the first part was used as Spangles’s theme on RNI.

RICHARD PARK (Scotland)

WILD WEEKEND - The Rockin’ Rebels Stateside SS162 (1962) The "Rockin’ Rebels" were originally masterminded by Buffalo deejay Tom Shannon and Phil Todaro. Shannon had a show on WKBW named "Tom Shannon's Wild weekend show", he hired a local group "The Buffalo Rebels" to record the theme and it was issued on the Mar Lee label in 1961 (MarLee 0095). In late 1962 the record picked up interest in New York and the rights were sold to Swan who re-released the track and saw it chart at no 8 in the Billboard Hot 100.

b) SOUL FINGER - Bar-Kays  Stax 601014 (1967) Also used by Stuart Henry.

c) I’M COMING THROUGH - Sounds Incorporated Columbia DB7737 (22 Oct. 1965). Sounds Incorporated were a six piece instrumental group formed in Kent in 1961 and made their TV debut backing Gene Vincent on "Thank your Lucky Stars". They built up a tremendous reputation with visiting US artistes and backed Brenda Lee, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard, who called them "the best backing band in the world". They later acted as support band for the Beatles and backed the group on "Good Morning" on the Sgt Pepper album.

ROCKING GOOSE - Johhny and the Hurricanes London HLX 9190 (1960). The track also features on the CD's The Veronica Story BR Music VS 3108-2 (NL.1991) and We Love the Pirate Stations BR Music 434-2 (NL.1998). Also used by Bruce Holland.
