FINAL   DAYS

Final Days
What was to be Free radio's final days, all appeared to be fairly normal, with the daily soap opera that was Radio Caroline. Alex Rogers mentioned, on Thursday 1st November 1990, that he'd "put on a new pair of jeans today, 28 waist. Problem is I'm a 30, so I look like a light bulb now". Later he said that he and Rico would be painting in the afternoon, "Radio Caroline in white letters". Shortly after starting her show that afternoon, Caroline Martin mentioned that everyone was "all clean and scrubbed out there. It takes a lot to do it, like heating a tin bath in front of the fire". Friday 2nd November 1990, saw Radio Caroline off the air for much of the day. Rico opened at 0600, but the station suddenly went off the air after just twenty minutes. They returned later in the afternoon playing continuous music with occasional jingles until Viewpoint. Neil Gates closed down at 01.00 on the 3rd November 1990. That afternoon, during bad weather, Rico said he was "bored with bobbing up and down in this studio". He decided to tie the studio bunny mascot to his headphones. He later said that when he got out of the studio chair he hit his head on the ceiling. He thought something must have happened overnight, but it was the bunny on the headphones. On Sunday 4th, Alex Rogers was having problems waking up. Shortly after starting his morning show, he said he was "using the cigarette and coffee technique, but can't get anyone to make coffee". He said later it "must be the only morning show, where you can hear the deejay wake up". That afternoon, Caroline Martin reminded her dad to send away for her free PG Tips mug. She said she'd "been saving for it for a long time". Neil Gates started his show at 2135 that evening, after Viewpoint. Neil closed Radio Caroline for the night at 0103 on the 5th November 1990. A carrier signal was noted at 0615, this continued until the transmitter was switched off at 0847. It was to be the last that was heard of Radio Caroline, broadcasting as a free radio station from the international waters of the North Sea. Ironically the final record played by Neil Gates, was Pilot of the Airwaves, by Charlie Dore.
