HAPPY     BIRTHDAY

Happy Birthday
On the 30th March 1986, a party to celebrate 22 years of broadcasting took place on air throughout the night starting at 01.00 with both frequencies carrying the same programme. Mark Matthews was the host and was joined at various times during the night by Mike Barrington, Stevie Lane, Fergie McNeil, Tony Peters and Ad Roberts. At 04.00 it was announced that three stations were broadcasting -Caroline 558, Caroline Overdrive on overtime and Radio Monique's international breakfast show every Sunday between 04.00 and 08.00. A different version of the sung advert for Superior Leisurewear,s Caroline teeshirts was aired during the party, as follows: When I woke up this morning with my hair down in my eyes, (Hey man that's really something, what did you do) I puked up my porridge you can imagine my surprise, what a surprise not only are they overworked and sarcastic on air, but the DJ's have to sing on ads for Superior Leisurewear, Voice Philips advertising the only ridiculous alternative.

A Tribute
During the evening on 963, on Thursday 3rd April 1986, a 45 minute tribute to one of Radio Caroline's first listeners, the late Roland "Buster" Pearson was aired. This featured clips from several interviews with Buster over the years, plus tracks from Loving Awareness. Strong winds were hitting the Ross Revenge around this time, on the 6th Tony Peters said that it was the roughest he'd known it since he'd been on board. North East winds of 45 knots continued to batter the Ross Revenge on the 9th and the following day the station was forced off the air several times. 558 kept going on and off from early afternoon, before finally "technical problems" caused both channels to pack up just after five on both channels. Both channels returned about 3 hours later. Mark Mathews, on 558 said all you news agencies will have to search for another story now, we're still here. He later spoke of the slight technical problem and added that our electronic wizard Father Michael O'Barrington has sorted it out in no time at all. Mark also thanked John Lewis and Fergie for getting them back on the air.
