DRIFTING

Drifting
The 20th January 1984, saw the Ross Revenge lose her anchor, and drift south onto a sand bank two miles inside British Territorial waters. Broadcasts ceased. Two days later, the radioship returned to her anchorage, and broadcasts resumed. The Ross Revenge drifted again, during a force twelve storm on the 3rd March 1984. The ship dragged her emergency anchor. The next day "Yorkie", the main engineer from the Laser ship, provided the still drifting Caroline crew with a secure anchor, so that the two ships would not come to any harm. (They were anchored about a quarter of a mile apart). Work on the anchor system went on all night, and by nine in the morning on 5th March 1984, the new anchor system was fully installed.

Top 500
Radio Caroline celebrated her twentieth birthday, on 28th March 1984, with a top 500 compiled from listeners Top 10's from over the past twenty years. Over the Easter holiday period, Caroline ran 24 hour programming, and just after the evening news at six on Easter Monday, the final record was played. Number one was John Lennon and Imagine. Caroline deejay Andy Archer appeared in court on 20th July 1984. He'd been found hiding in the fuel tank room of a launch owned by Melton boat yard, by police, when it returned to Melton, Suffolk, UK. He was fined £500 plus £100 costs. The launch owners Richard Jonathan and Michael Victor East were fined £40 and £60 respectively.

Laser 558
Early in 1984, Radio Caroline had been joined by another offshore station, the American backed and programmed Laser on board the MV Communicator. The station had briefly made several test broadcasts using an antenna held aloft by a balloon, but this quickly proved unworkable. A more traditional antenna system was erected on the Communicator, and in May 1984, Laser 558 burst onto the offshore airwaves. It quickly became very popular, taking away some of Radio Caroline's audience, as well as a large part of the UK commercial radio audience.
