LASER 558, THE EPILOGUE
The end of 1985 saw the MV Communicator anchored in the River Stour, near Harwich. On Monday 14th December 1985, the High court in London heard a case by the Admiralty Marshall who intended to force the sale of the ship and its contents, to pay off the writs served on the ship. These writs were apparently in excess of £100,000. The scrap value of the ship was given as about £8,000 and the Admiralty Marshall was looking for around a million pounds for the ship and broadcast equipment. The government were known to be unhappy about the sale and claimed the Admiralty could be in breach of the MOA by selling the ship.
Meanwhile, most of Laser's former deejays had returned home, Tommy Rivers returned to the USA to continue his studies for a Doctorate in Communications, Erin Kelly had been in London on holiday, while Jonell was working for KDWB in her home town of Minneapolis, as well as working part-time in a department store.
Charlie Wolf guested for a week on Radio Orwell in early December and also presented several shows on ILR stations on the New Year. Charlie and Liz West remained the only Laser DJ's still in the UK, their futures uncertain.
